Progress at The Gateway – Autumn Newsletter 2006

Transfer of ownership of the Gateway wood to CCW is well under way. Woodwork for the woodland signs, completed by Kenny and Julian, is ready for installation, once the missives are transferred. A few rustic seats are also in production!

Clearing litter

Skene Group has very kindly agreed to donate aggregate to produce a well-drained, hard surface on the car park area, once the log piles have been removed.

The rough tracks and large patches of willow herb have been strimmed and cleared again, and some tree pruning has been carried out following advice from John Gilmour of Balcormo Mains.  The autumn tree planting  will involve small groups of trees in some of the cleared areas, and will probably include a shelter belt of scots pine along the southern edge.

CWA Grant

We have been awarded a small grant of £100 by the Community Woodland Association, which will help pay for our autumn planting event. Well grown young trees from the Hill of Tarvit Nursery  are to be planted at the Gateway, and replacement saplings will go back into the Nursery.

Hill of Tarvit Tree Nursery

For many years, the Fife and kinross branch of the SWT have run a small tree nursery (500 – 1000) trees, in the bottom corner of the old walled garden at  Mansion House of Hill of Tarvit. Volunteers have grown young trees in pots then planted them out at the nursery. The trees have been used to plant up SWT’s numerous local nature reserves, and have sometimes been sold to raise money for SWT.

CCW has started to manage this attractive site by strimming around the deer/rabbit fencing, and starting a much-needed programme of weed control. The trees will be planted locally, and sold to raise funds, as before. We are very grateful to SWT for this opportunity.
